Storage boxes with lids, wheels and ample capacity for every room

Multifunctional storage boxes for clothes, toys, bedding, office supplies and household storage, with a choice of lids, wheels and capacity sizes.

Buy storage boxes for the home, office and garage

A multifunctional storage box provides space for larger quantities of clothing, toys, bedding, shoes, household supplies and office materials. Unlike a small storage container with compartments, a storage box is primarily intended for bulk storage. You can compare boxes by capacity in litres, dimensions, lid, wheels, transparency and stackability.

At Discountershop, you can find plastic storage boxes for bedrooms, children’s rooms, living rooms, offices, attics, garages and sheds. The range includes clear boxes in sizes such as 11, 15 and 22 litres, as well as low underbed boxes in 24- and 32-litre sizes. Always check the current product specifications for exact measurements and features.

“Choose the location and contents first. You can then decide whether you need a low box with wheels, a clear box or a stackable model.”

View all storage boxes

Why choose a multifunctional storage box?

A storage box can hold everyday belongings as well as items that are only needed during part of the year. A box used for winter clothing during summer can later hold Christmas decorations, toys or spare bedding.

A plastic storage box may be used for:

  • clothing and seasonal clothing;

  • shoes and accessories;

  • blankets, sheets and towels;

  • toys and game pieces;

  • books and magazines;

  • paper and office supplies;

  • cables and electronic accessories;

  • Christmas and party decorations;

  • camping equipment;

  • cleaning cloths;

  • lightweight tools and DIY materials;

  • hobby supplies;

  • car and bicycle accessories;

  • items stored in an attic, garage or shed.

Always check whether the box and storage location are suitable for the contents. Paper, textiles, photographs and electronics require more protection from moisture and temperature changes than plastic household items.

Which storage box do you need?

Do not begin by choosing the largest capacity. Start with the location where the box will be placed. A high-capacity box is of little use if it does not fit through a cupboard opening, underneath a bed or on the intended shelf.

Measure:

  1. the available width;

  2. the maximum depth;

  3. the available height;

  4. the doorway or cupboard opening;

  5. bed legs and central supports;

  6. the space required to remove the lid;

  7. the clearance required for the wheels.

Allow for projecting handles, closing clips and the rim of the lid.

Choose according to the contents

Next, determine what you need to store:

  • For clothing and bedding, an enclosed box with a fitted lid is often practical.

  • For toys, a box with a wide opening makes access easier.

  • For storage underneath a bed, choose a low underbed box, optionally with wheels.

  • A clear storage box helps you identify the contents quickly.

  • Handles and wheels are useful when the box must be moved regularly.

  • Stackability matters when several boxes will be placed in a cupboard or shelving unit.

  • For use in a garage or shed, also consider the conditions inside the room.

Storage box with a lid

A storage box with a lid keeps loose items together and provides more protection against ordinary household dust than an open basket. Depending on the model, the lid may rest on the box, click into position or be secured with closing clips.

A lidded storage box can be used for:

  • seasonal clothing;

  • bedding;

  • children’s toys;

  • Christmas decorations;

  • documents;

  • hobby supplies;

  • shoes;

  • household accessories.

A lid does not automatically make a storage box airtight, dustproof or waterproof. Check the product information if you require any of these properties.

Removable lid or clip-on lid?

A removable lid provides quick access. A clip-on lid or lid with closing clips will generally remain in place more securely when the box is moved.

When choosing a clip-on lid, consider:

  • the number of closing points;

  • how closely the lid fits the box;

  • the strength of the clips;

  • the space required to open the box;

  • the load placed on the lid when boxes are stacked.

Do not force a lid closed when the contents project above the rim. This could deform the lid, clips or side walls.

Storage box with wheels

A storage box with wheels is useful when the box is kept at floor level or moved regularly. Wheels reduce the need to lift a filled box, although you must still be able to guide and control it.

A wheeled storage box can be placed:

  • underneath a bed;

  • underneath a desk;

  • underneath a cupboard shelf;

  • inside a walk-in wardrobe;

  • in an office;

  • in a garage;

  • in a hobby room.

Check whether the wheels are suitable for the floor. Dirt or grit trapped around the wheels may scratch wood, laminate and other sensitive surfaces.

When are wheels useful?

Choose a storage box with wheels when:

  • the box sits deep underneath furniture;

  • you need the contents regularly;

  • lifting the filled box would be impractical;

  • there is enough level space to roll it;

  • the box does not need to be pulled over thresholds.

Small wheels may not roll easily over carpets, joints, thresholds or uneven floors. Do not lift a filled storage box by its lid.

Underbed storage boxes for unused floor space

An underbed storage box is a low box designed to slide underneath a bed. It uses floor space that might otherwise remain empty. The category currently includes low models in sizes such as 24 and 32 litres, including boxes with lids and wheels.

Use an underbed box for:

  • seasonal clothing;

  • shoes;

  • spare bedding;

  • towels;

  • toys;

  • wrapping paper;

  • hobby materials;

  • small bags;

  • sports accessories.

Measure the available height at several points. The space may be lower in the centre because of a support beam, bed base or sagging mattress structure. Also check whether the box can pass between the bed legs.

For a more focused selection, link to the underbed storage boxes category.

Clear storage boxes

A clear storage box lets you view the contents without opening the lid. This is useful when several boxes have the same dimensions or are stacked on top of one another.

A transparent storage box may hold:

  • toy sets;

  • seasonal clothing;

  • decorations;

  • office supplies;

  • hobby materials;

  • spare household products;

  • cleaning accessories.

A clear box still benefits from a label. Other belongings may block your view through the side, and small items may remain difficult to identify.

Do not leave light-sensitive contents in direct sunlight for extended periods. Sunlight may affect certain materials and colours.

Black and opaque storage boxes

A black or opaque storage box keeps its contents out of sight. This may be useful in open cupboards, offices and living rooms. Clear labels are particularly important when the box itself is not transparent.

A label might identify:

  • the room;

  • the type of contents;

  • the season;

  • the owner;

  • the date on which the contents were checked.

Do not place sensitive information on the outside of a box used in a shared space.

Stackable storage boxes

Stackable storage boxes help use the available height inside a cupboard, shelving unit, attic or garage. Safe stacking involves more than simply placing one box on another.

Check:

  • whether the base fits securely into the rim of the lid;

  • how many boxes may be stacked;

  • how much weight the lid can support;

  • whether the floor or shelf is level;

  • whether the stack remains clear of doors and walkways;

  • whether you need regular access to the bottom box.

Place heavy boxes at the bottom and lighter boxes at the top. Do not stack damaged boxes. Avoid placing a tall stack on a mobile base unless the system is designed for it.

Keep stacked boxes organised

Create a fixed storage system:

  • one label colour for each room;

  • one box for each season;

  • one box for each family member;

  • one box for each activity;

  • a contents list on the front;

  • a number that corresponds with a digital inventory.

Keep frequently used belongings in the highest or most accessible boxes.

Large storage boxes

A large storage box is suitable for bulky belongings. Do not consider capacity in litres alone. A fully filled box may become too heavy to lift safely.

Large boxes can hold:

  • blankets and pillows;

  • winter coats;

  • large toys;

  • sports equipment;

  • camping supplies;

  • Christmas decorations;

  • lightweight garden accessories;

  • spare household items.

Divide heavy belongings between several medium-sized boxes. This makes them easier to move and reduces the load on each base.

Which capacity do you need?

The category includes different sizes, with current examples of 11, 15, 22, 24 and 32 litres. Foldable crates may have larger capacities, but a crate has a different construction and use from an enclosed storage box.

Approximate capacityPossible application
11 litresSmall accessories, cables or office supplies
15 litresShoes, towels or compact hobby supplies
22 litresClothing, toys or household supplies
24 litresLow storage underneath a bed, desk or cupboard
32 litresBedding, seasonal clothing or larger toys

These are examples rather than fixed rules. The internal measurements and shape determine whether your belongings will fit.

Internal and external measurements

The external measurements determine whether the box fits the intended location. The internal measurements determine what can be placed inside it.

Sloping walls, wheels, handles and lid rims may make the usable space smaller than the external dimensions suggest. Measure the largest item and compare it with the stated internal measurements.

Storage boxes for clothing

A clothes storage box is suitable for clothing that is not used every day. Examples include winter jumpers, summer clothing, children’s clothes in different sizes, sportswear and accessories.

Before storing clothing:

  • wash and dry everything completely;

  • empty all pockets;

  • fold clothing without creating hard creases;

  • do not fill the box above its rim;

  • add a label with the size, season or owner;

  • inspect clothing during long-term storage;

  • keep the box in a clean, dry room.

Damp clothing may cause odours and mould. A general plastic storage box is not automatically suitable for every attic, cellar or shed.

Toy storage boxes for children’s rooms

A toy storage box can hold larger toy sets, soft toys, building blocks and dressing-up clothes.

When selecting a box for toys, consider:

  • rounded, undamaged edges;

  • a size the child can use appropriately;

  • the weight when filled;

  • whether the lid can be handled safely;

  • the size of loose components;

  • placement near floor level;

  • enough space to open the box.

A standard storage box is not a toy and should not be used as a seat, step or ride-on cart. Keep small parts away from young children.

Storage boxes for bedrooms and living rooms

Bedroom

Use storage boxes for clothing, bedding, shoes, accessories and sports equipment. Low models with wheels can be placed underneath a bed when the measurements match.

Living room

Inside a cupboard or shelving unit, a storage box can keep toys, cables, chargers, game pieces and hobby supplies out of sight. Choose a size that can still be lifted safely from the cupboard.

For belongings that must remain directly accessible, storage baskets may be more practical.

Storage boxes for offices

An office storage box can hold archive materials, paper, cables, spare products, stationery and promotional materials.

When storing documents, consider:

  • the paper size;

  • the internal box dimensions;

  • moisture and temperature;

  • the filled weight;

  • the required retention period;

  • whether the contents are confidential.

A plastic box with a lid may protect paper from ordinary household dust, but it is not fire-resistant, burglary-resistant or archival-certified storage.

For small desk accessories and components, storage containers with compartments are more suitable.

Storage boxes for attics

An attic storage box may hold Christmas decorations, seasonal clothing, camping supplies and other items that are used infrequently.

Check:

  • whether the staircase or loft ladder is wide enough;

  • whether you can carry the filled box safely;

  • whether the attic floor can support the load;

  • whether there are significant temperature changes;

  • whether the room remains dry;

  • whether sunlight enters through a roof window.

Do not completely fill a large box with heavy books. Divide heavy materials between smaller boxes.

Garage storage boxes and shed storage

A garage storage box can group car accessories, bicycle supplies, cleaning items and lightweight DIY materials. In a shed, a box may hold gardening gloves, plant labels, garden ties and other dry accessories.

Consider:

  • moisture;

  • frost;

  • heat;

  • condensation;

  • direct sunlight;

  • pests;

  • chemical products;

  • sharp tools.

Store paint, fuels, pesticides, batteries and other hazardous products according to their safety instructions. A general storage box is not a safety cabinet.

Only describe a storage box as waterproof when the product specifications explicitly confirm this.

Storage boxes for garden supplies

A storage box for garden supplies may be suitable for lightweight, dry accessories such as:

  • gardening gloves;

  • plant labels;

  • garden ties;

  • clips;

  • empty plant pots;

  • hose connectors;

  • clean garden cloths;

  • small hand tools.

Clean and dry garden accessories before putting them away. For large cushions, heavy garden tools or long-term outdoor storage, a purpose-made storage chest or garden box may be more appropriate.

How to clean a plastic storage box

Check the care instructions for the specific product. The following approach may be suitable for many plastic boxes:

  1. Empty the box completely.

  2. Remove dust and loose dirt.

  3. Wipe the base, walls and lid with a soft cloth.

  4. If necessary, use lukewarm water and a mild cleaning product.

  5. Clean seams, closing clips and wheel housings.

  6. Remove any remaining cleaning-product residue.

  7. Allow every component to dry completely.

  8. Return the contents only when the box is fully dry.

Avoid abrasive products when they could damage the surface. Never seal damp belongings inside a storage box.

Common mistakes when choosing storage boxes

  • Looking only at capacity in litres.

  • Confusing external dimensions with usable internal measurements.

  • Forgetting to allow for handles, wheels and lid rims.

  • Buying an underbed box without measuring central bed supports.

  • Making a large box too heavy to lift.

  • Assuming that every lid is dustproof or waterproof.

  • Stacking boxes that are not designed for stacking.

  • Placing heavy boxes on high cupboard shelves.

  • Closing damp clothing or garden items inside a box.

  • Using an indoor box outside for extended periods.

  • Storing confidential documents without adequate security.

  • Using a toy storage box as a seat or step.

Frequently asked questions about storage boxes

Which capacity do I need for clothing?

This depends on the number of garments, their thickness and the shape of the box. Measure the stack of folded clothing and compare it with the internal dimensions. Divide heavy clothing between several boxes to make lifting easier.

How do I measure whether an underbed box will fit?

Measure the available height, width and depth at several points. Check the bed legs, central support and any sagging. Allow additional height for the lid and wheels.

Which is more practical: a clear or black storage box?

A clear box makes the contents easier to identify. A black or opaque box keeps them out of sight and reduces direct light exposure. Use labels with either option.

Can I lift a filled storage box by its lid?

No, unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Lift the box by its designated handles or support the base. The lid could detach or deform.

Are wheels suitable for every floor?

Not automatically. Small, hard wheels can collect dirt and damage sensitive floors. Clean the wheels and check that they turn freely before moving the box.

Can I store books in a large storage box?

Yes, but books can make a box very heavy. Use several smaller boxes and store them in a dry, stable environment.

How can I prevent a storage box from sagging?

Do not exceed its maximum load, distribute the weight evenly and support the complete base. Do not leave part of the box projecting beyond a shelf.

Can electronic devices be kept in a garage storage box?

Only when the temperature, humidity and packaging are suitable for the device. Garages may be damp and subject to significant temperature changes. Follow the device manufacturer’s storage guidance.

Does a storage box need ventilation for textiles?

Textiles must always be clean and completely dry. Whether ventilation is appropriate depends on the material, storage duration and room conditions. Inspect stored clothing regularly for moisture and odours.

How can I prevent condensation inside a closed storage box?

Place only dry belongings inside a dry box and close it in a dry room. Significant temperature changes can cause condensation, so choose a location with stable conditions.

Can I keep a storage box in a cellar?

This depends on the humidity, temperature and risk of water reaching the floor. Where possible, raise boxes above floor level and check whether both the box and its contents suit the conditions.

How can I keep a stack of boxes accessible?

Label every box on the visible side, place frequently used belongings near the top and avoid unnecessarily high stacks. For regular access, use shelving with individually accessible levels.

Choose a storage box by dimensions, capacity and use

First decide where the box will be placed and what it needs to hold. Then compare the internal and external measurements, capacity in litres, lid, wheels and stackability.

At Discountershop, you can compare multifunctional storage boxes for clothing, toys, office supplies, underbed use and storage throughout the home or garage.

“The best storage box is not the largest one, but the box that still fits when filled, remains accessible and can be moved safely.”

Storage boxes with lids, wheels and ample capacity for every room

  • clothing and seasonal clothing;

  • shoes and accessories;

  • blankets, sheets and towels;

  • toys and game pieces;

  • books and magazines;

  • paper and office supplies;

  • cables and electronic accessories;

  • Christmas and party decorations;

  • camping equipment;

  • cleaning cloths;

  • lightweight tools and DIY materials;

  • hobby supplies;

  • car and bicycle accessories;

Measure:

  1. the available width;

  2. the maximum depth;

  3. the available height;

  4. the doorway or cupboard opening;

  5. bed legs and central supports;

  6. the space required to remove the lid;

  7. the clearance required for the wheels.

  • seasonal clothing;

  • bedding;

  • children’s toys;

  • Christmas decorations;

  • documents;

  • hobby supplies;

  • shoes;

  • the number of closing points;

  • how closely the lid fits the box;

  • the strength of the clips;

  • the space required to open the box;

  • underneath a bed;

  • underneath a desk;

  • underneath a cupboard shelf;

  • inside a walk-in wardrobe;

  • in an office;

  • in a garage;

  • in a hobby room.

Check whether the wheels are suitable for the floor. Dirt or grit trapped around the wheels may scratch wood, laminate and other sensitive surfaces.

When are wheels useful?

Choose a storage box with wheels when:

  • the box sits deep underneath furniture;

  • you need the contents regularly;

  • lifting the filled box would be impractical;

  • there is enough level space to roll it;

  • seasonal clothing;

  • shoes;

  • spare bedding;

  • towels;

  • toys;

  • wrapping paper;

  • hobby materials;

  • small bags;

  • toy sets;

  • seasonal clothing;

  • decorations;

  • office supplies;

  • hobby materials;

  • spare household products;

  • the room;

  • the type of contents;

  • the season;

  • the owner;

Check:

  • whether the base fits securely into the rim of the lid;

  • how many boxes may be stacked;

  • how much weight the lid can support;

  • whether the floor or shelf is level;

  • whether the stack remains clear of doors and walkways;

  • one label colour for each room;

  • one box for each season;

  • one box for each family member;

  • one box for each activity;

  • a contents list on the front;

  • blankets and pillows;

  • winter coats;

  • large toys;

  • sports equipment;

  • camping supplies;

  • Christmas decorations;

  • lightweight garden accessories;

  • wash and dry everything completely;

  • empty all pockets;

  • fold clothing without creating hard creases;

  • do not fill the box above its rim;

  • add a label with the size, season or owner;

  • inspect clothing during long-term storage;

  • rounded, undamaged edges;

  • a size the child can use appropriately;

  • the weight when filled;

  • whether the lid can be handled safely;

  • the size of loose components;

  • placement near floor level;

  • the paper size;

  • the internal box dimensions;

  • moisture and temperature;

  • the filled weight;

  • the required retention period;

Check:

  • whether the staircase or loft ladder is wide enough;

  • whether you can carry the filled box safely;

  • whether the attic floor can support the load;

  • whether there are significant temperature changes;

  • whether the room remains dry;

Consider:

  • moisture;

  • frost;

  • heat;

  • condensation;

  • direct sunlight;

  • pests;

  • chemical products;

  • gardening gloves;

  • plant labels;

  • garden ties;

  • clips;

  • empty plant pots;

  • hose connectors;

  • clean garden cloths;
